Eight days on one of India's highest roads - bare brown mountains, monasteries on cliffs, and the clearest night sky we have seen.

The road to Spiti does not ease you in. After Sarahan and Kalpa the green falls away, and by the time we reached Kaza the world had turned into shades of brown, blue and white.

We drove it slowly on purpose - a day at a time, sleeping lower than we climbed, drinking more water than felt necessary.

Good to know

  • Best time to go: June to September, when the passes are open.
  • How we got there: Pinjore → Sarahan → Kalpa → Kaza → Chitkul, by car.
  • Where we stayed: heritage stays and homestays; book ahead in season.
  • Altitude: acclimatise for a night at Kalpa before Kaza. Carry basic altitude medicine after asking your doctor.
  • What it cost: about ₹42,000 for two, including fuel and stays.
